  • Master Bath Remodel Begins

Posted December 24, 2017 in The House

A few weeks ago, we started a complete remodel of our master bathroom. Our master bathroom was unchanged from when the house was built back in 1999, and it really needed a refit. It had this basic, plain white tile everywhere with a really ugly counter top and mismatch of plumbing fixtures and trim. Here's some pictures of the bathroom right before demolition.

  • New Floors

Posted July 30, 2017 in The House

If you've been to our house, you likely noticed our yellow hardwood floors. Whoever built the house used a clear finish on unstained floors that over time yellowed. Not a good look. Here's what they looked like:

  • Storage Room Shelves

Posted November 6, 2013 in The House

Back in April, Anna and I built a set of shelves for our storage room. I was just pulling some pictures off of our camera and found these pictures I took as I assembled the shelves. I cut them in the workshop and Anna and I painted them before carrying them into the storage room to build them in place. The room was too small for me to build them in the shop and move them over in a finished state.

  • Finished Piece

Posted October 27, 2013 in Miscellaneous, The House

Well, on Friday I finished that piece of furniture I was working on. It turned out great and has already been put in August's room.

  • Building Some Furniture

Posted October 25, 2013 in Family, Miscellaneous, The House

One of the cool things about having a workshop is using it to build stuff. A while back, Anna asked me to put together some shelving for August and Elizabeth's rooms. She wanted something with slots for those collapsible cube storage thingies about 12" by 12" by 12".

  • My Current Project

Posted April 11, 2013 in The House

We have this storage room that’s full of boxes and had these nasty wire shelves on one wall. As soon as we moved in, we yanked down most of the shelves and had less storage room than we started with. After Anna saw my work on the CD shelves (I still need to write about that project) she agreed to let me make storage shelves for this storage room.

  • 2415 Discs

Posted January 4, 2013 in The House

I have a bunch of music CDs. I’ve been collecting them since college and I simply love music. It doesn’t hurt that my best friend worked at a record (CD) store for more than a decade. Many of my discs are promos or ones I bought at a discount, but still – I have a lot of CDs.

  • Workshop

Posted December 26, 2012 in The House, The Twins

Anna took over my workshop the last month or so – not that I mind. She and a friend got some used school desks and moved them into my workshop to scrape, sand, glue and paint them. The desk undersides were covered with used chewing gum – even I thought it was gross and I didn’t have to scrape it all off. They turned out great, see the picture below of one of them under our Christmas tree.

  • Paul Bunyon

Posted March 13, 2011 in Miscellaneous, The House, The Twins

We had quite a busy day yesterday. The previous owner of this house planted 140 trees in the front yard. The beauty of him doing that is that you can't see the house very clearly from the street (even though it's not that far from the street) so it hides some of the size of it and we get a great amount of shade in the afternoon (since the house faces West) which makes the house cooler during hot days.

  • Garage Shelves

Posted February 18, 2011 in The House

I moved my tools and my office into my new man cave back in October. I've been trying to get all of my tools unboxed so I can start doing some of the projects I wanted to do around here and it's just been a struggle. Back during the holidays I decided to put some cabinets in the back of the new garage so I can store my tools in them. I started looking at cabinets on sale at Home Depot, but they really didn't suit my needs. My brother in law Ed suggested a few things and one of them was to put a space between the cabinets for larger equipment. It was a great idea.

  • White Christmas

Posted December 26, 2010 in The House

Apparently there hasn't been a white Christmas in 40 years or so on Charlotte. Then, we move here and change everything! The snow arrived last night (so technically it's Christmas snow) but these pictures show what we woke up to this morning. Beautiful!

  • Completed Tree

Posted December 9, 2010 in The House

Our Christmas tree looks amazing, best tree I've ever gotten. Here's a picture of the final product.

  • Big Christmas Tree

Posted December 5, 2010 in The House

Older Ohio houses always had these low ceilings. In my parents house, we were always stuck with a 6 or 7 foot tree just because of the ceilings. In the south, we all have these great big ceilings and our den has big vaulted ceilings - something like 15 or 18 feet tall. Yesterday we went out looking for a tree and of course we had so much room to work with, we picked up a ginormous tree (like 12 feet tall). Not quite too tall for the room, it took two men to carry this tree in, but we could have gone even further if we wanted to (I didn't want too).

  • Man Cave Finished

Posted November 27, 2010 in The House

I was able to move into my new, what to call it, outbuilding a few weeks ago. The builder finished most of the work, only a few little things left over and a couple of big things (such as my book shelves and the air conditioning unit in my workshop). I've been so busy lately that I didn't get a chance to give you some updated photos, so I thought I'd post some close to finished pictures for you to see. The landscaping is finished and the office should be done in a few weeks (once I get the book shelves installed and filled).  Here's what it looked like a few weeks ago. Enjoy!

  • Garage Update

Posted August 27, 2010 in The House

Well, Stucco is on the walls and we're very slowly making progress.  The painters are supposed to be here today painting the trim, but of course they're nowhere to be found. Anna's over there doing some more priming; we're supposed to paint the downstairs this weekend and she'll do the upstairs next week while the kids are in school. For some bizarre reason I'm having a really hard time getting her to actually buy paint. I don't understand it, but it is what it is. Theoretically the hardwood will be delivered next week and the floors will go in soon after.

  • Camera's Fixed

Posted August 1, 2010 in The House

Well, about $350 later, our camera has been fixed and I can get back to taking some good pictures of the new garage/office. While I was out of town last week, they finished framing the building, put on the roof and installed the windows. Here's some update pictures:

  • Watching the Walls Go Up

Posted July 20, 2010 in The House

Well, after many (many, many) problems and delays, the walls are finally going up on my new garage/office/workshop.  Half of the wood was delivered yesterday and the framers started framing early this morning. Two walls are up and the back wall is being built in place.  They'll have the front wall installed before lunch and may even get started on the floor joist installation. They may even have the second floor framed today.

  • The Big Dig Pouring Concrete

Posted June 23, 2010 in The House

Well, the big concrete trucks came today and poured the footers for the new garage/office. Take a look.

  • The Play Fort Completed

Posted May 31, 2010 in The House

Well, my brother and sister came up for the weekend to help with building the fort. We spent the whole day Saturday cutting and screwing in all of the parts and ended up with a play fort that Anna nicely said 'this turned out much better than I thought it would - it looks like it was built by a professional, like something you'd see in a magazine.

  • Building a Play Fort Part One

Posted May 26, 2010 in The House

Last fall we got a family friend to help me build a play house in the back yard for the kids. We couldn't really afford it at the time, but we had an opportunity and, since we knew we were moving south, it would give me a chance to do a learner house before building the longer lasting one in Charlotte.
