  • Dexter Keep-Away

Posted September 23, 2014 in The Dogs, The Twins

Dexter has started playing keep-away in the morning with neighbor kids as they wait for the school bus (the kids). He's gotten pretty good at avoiding the kids, no matter how many are chasing him.

  • Workshop

Posted December 26, 2012 in The House, The Twins

Anna took over my workshop the last month or so – not that I mind. She and a friend got some used school desks and moved them into my workshop to scrape, sand, glue and paint them. The desk undersides were covered with used chewing gum – even I thought it was gross and I didn’t have to scrape it all off. They turned out great, see the picture below of one of them under our Christmas tree.

  • Tickled Tooth

Posted April 12, 2011 in The Twins

Elizabeth's been losing some teeth lately. She fell a while back and whacked two of her front teeth and they started to wiggle. On Sunday, she was getting out of her church dress when I walked into the room. She had her dress pulled over her head with her belly exposed. Of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity to give her a big belly tickle. She screamed, pulled her hands down and promptly knocked one of her loose teeth out of her mouth.

  • Paul Bunyon

Posted March 13, 2011 in Miscellaneous, The House, The Twins

We had quite a busy day yesterday. The previous owner of this house planted 140 trees in the front yard. The beauty of him doing that is that you can't see the house very clearly from the street (even though it's not that far from the street) so it hides some of the size of it and we get a great amount of shade in the afternoon (since the house faces West) which makes the house cooler during hot days.

  • Soccer Practice

Posted March 10, 2011 in The Twins

Well, we signed the kids up for Soccer at the local Y. August played last fall and Elizabeth didn't want to, but this year she's in. We split them up, so they're not on the same team. We thought that would be best considering Elizabeth's ability to be a bull in a china shop.

  • Mozart

Posted February 11, 2011 in The Twins

The other night, the kids were supposed to be in bed and I was sitting on the couch downstairs watching the Simpsons. The den has this huge vaulted ceiling and it's open upstairs right by the kid's rooms. It sucks for watching action films or something you actually want to hear any night, but what can you do?  I told Anna that I want to close the opening with Glass Block - she is of course not in agreement.

  • Worst Dad Ever

Posted December 26, 2010 in The Twins

This weekend I did some things that just has Anna shaking her head.

  • Playing Golf With August

Posted July 25, 2010 in The Twins

August and I headed out to play golf yesterday. My back's been bothering me for a long time now and was finally getting good enough that I thought I could handle it. It was of course 100 degrees F, but we went out anyway.

  • Popular Kids

Posted May 2, 2010 in The Twins

August has been bugging us for some time now to let him go over to a classmate’s house (let’s call her Suzie). He’s made us drive into her cul-de-sac to try to find her house and this weekend I promised we’d ride our bikes over there to see if we could see her outside. We headed over and found them – her and her sister (go ahead and crank on my grammar) rushed over to see the twins and Suzie gave August a huge hug. They rushed off to play while I met the father and later the mother. It’s so cool to see the kids make friends, but the huge hug he got was…interesting. I didn’t know 6 year olds hugged that much, but a lot of girls hug August.

  • Kicking the Soccer Ball

Posted April 19, 2010 in The Twins

I had a few minutes before a customer call so I headed outside to see what Anna and the kids were doing. Anna had purchased some pine straw from a wandering salesman ($4 per bundle, cash) and she was spreading them around the beds. There was a soccer ball on the ground and I told her I was going to see if I could hit the kids (who were playing about 50 yards away). I put the ball down, wound up and kicked it. It curved slightly as it made its way to August (who was riding his bike on the sidewalk). It hit the ground in front of him, bounced up and hit hit right in the middle of his chest. Nailed it!

  • Decorating the House for Easter

Posted March 29, 2010 in The Twins

While August and I were out doing Manly things, Elizabeth was busy decorating the house for Easter. She made little ornaments out of paper and taped them up all over the house (and I do mean all over the house).

  • Gettin Some Drywall with August

Posted March 28, 2010 in The Twins

Our new house has a lot of storage. When we first looked at it, it kept me awake the first night because I knew I loved the house, but I couldn't think of how, since the house didn't have a basement, we would be able to get all of our stuff put away. We went back the next day and I took an inventory of the storage space and quickly found that we had enough (probably too much).

  • G-Stink

Posted February 1, 2010 in The Twins

I've always had pet names for the twins. We started out calling them by their given names although we struggled for the first couple of weeks saying ‘August.’ Over time I started mixing in different names for them, to the point where the kids really aren’t sure what we’re going to call them.

  • Presents for the Sick

Posted December 26, 2009 in The Twins

I've been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks - I'm not going to go into what's wrong with me, but I have been pretty miserable. I've been sleeping a lot and when this all first started, August and Elizabeth were really cute in the way they tried to help take care of me (August especially). As I lay in bed, trying to recover I heard something happening at the bedroom door - it sounded like something trying to make its way underneath the closed door.

  • Reading Glasses

Posted December 13, 2009 in The Twins

So, I've had to wear reading glasses for the last couple of years. As I've gotten older, they've just not been working very well for me lately. At the same time, August has been bugging me over and over and over again about wanting his own pair of glasses. I told him that once I got new reading glasses, that I'd give him my old ones. Well, because of the nature of AT&T's benefits, I'm going to have to wait until next year to get in to see my eye doctor, so he was having to wait a long time. I finally decided yesterday that I just couldn't wait anymore - so we all headed over to Sam's Club to pick up a 4 pack of stronger reading glasses (I need 4 pair - one for the master bathroom (reading room), my travel bag, my workshop and my office).

  • Trouble

Posted November 3, 2009 in The Twins

Anna and I just played a game of Trouble with the twins. It was a lot of fun and interesting as the tables turned on each of us as we played. For a while, August was the clear leader but in a few quick rolls, he was effectively out of the game. Anna's relentless when it comes to sending people back home and Elizabeth amazed me with her calm demeanor as she got stuck home with all of her pieces for most of the game - she never gave up and didn't get frustrated at all.  August finally got tired and started acting ugly and what was a fun evening ended up being kinda a pain.  Oh well, they're 6.

  • Playing in the water

Posted October 17, 2009 in The Twins

Whenever I'm home alone with the kids on a Saturday (Anna's out of town this weekend) I always make sure I get caught up on the laundry. As soon as the kids see the water in the tub, they start their regular water play. First they dig out this 'thing' we have that's supposed to get cobwebs out of stuff - the poke around the ceiling and get it all cleaned up. Once that's done, they get mops, squeegees and other implements of cleaning and start dumping water from the tub and cleaning the laundry room floor. It's so funny to watch and they love doing it - just mopping the floor like they have no cares.

  • Things are different now that the kids are in school

Posted September 8, 2009 in The Twins

Things sure are different here now that the kids are in school. Let's go through some of the changes:

  • Exploding Beer Cans

Posted September 8, 2009 in The Twins

I went camping a few weeks ago with a couple of buddies and we had some beer left over (actually pretty hard to imagine if you think about it). Rather than bring a bunch of beer home (I really don't drink Beer at home - allergic to it) I suggested I leave the cooler for the next batch of campers to drink.

  • No Free Milk?

Posted August 25, 2009 in The Twins

We took the kids to their new school yesterday for open house. When we got home, Anna told me an interesting story I thought I'd share.
